Fat Injection
Fat injection is a technique where fat is harvested from one area of the body and transferred to another. This is typically done for lip augmentation or to augment other areas in the face. It has also been used for buttock augmentation. There have been reports of utilizing it for breast augmentation; however, it is felt that this is not appropriate. The reason for this is that only 20% of the fat will survive, and the remaining fat will be absorbed and possibly undergo calcification. Because calcifications are found on a mammogram, fat injections for breast augmentation are not performed.

The technique can usually be performed under local anesthesia. The fat is typically removed from areas that are exercise and diet resistant. This can be around the knee, the saddlebags, and the medial thighs. Abdominal fat is not considered a good source. As previously stated, typically 20% will survive, so multiple treatments are recommended. There is moderate bruising and swelling associated with the procedure; however, it is tolerated well by patients.
