For many of us, this causes a chronic furrow producing a frustrated and angry look on our face. This can be alienating to others, and upsetting to ourselves. Now, you can make these frown lines disappear without surgery and without scars, by a simple treatment of Botox. Botox, the trade name of Botulinum Toxin Type A, originally was used for the treatment of strabismus (lazy eye) and blepharospasm (uncontrolled eye blinking). Now it is being used by plastic surgeons to achieve a younger appearance. It accomplishes this by blocking the nerve impulses to muscles which then results in a form of temporary muscle paralysis. Our physicians inject an.extremely small dosage of Botox directly into the muscle. The action of that specific muscle is then stopped, ridding the area of problem frown lines or twitches. This is an entirely different approach to treating the aging face. Collagen and fat injections work by filling in a wrinkle. These fillers are not as effective as botox in improving the frown wrinkles between the eyebrows. By physiologically weakening the muscles, these wrinkles are removed naturally. The treatment takes only a few minutes to administer, and takes effect over the next two or three days. Botox is most effective for the frown lines between the eyebrows, but can also be used to lessen the horizontal wrinkles in the central portion of the forehead. It is not effective for wrinkles in the middle and lower portion of the face. Over the next three to five months the Botox will gradually lose its potency, eventually restoring the muscle to its original condition. When frown lines begin to appear again, readministering the Botox is all that is needed to maintain the desired result. Botox is safe and effective. There are no serious side effects associated with the use of botox with the doses that are employed. Side effects can be caused if the botox migrates from the injection sites. For this reason, it is wise to avoid massaging the area for 12 hours after the injection. Possible side effects include a small droop of the eyebrow or upper eyelid. Fortunately, if this occurs, it is temporary but may last 2-3 weeks. Botox is administered in the office by an injection directly into the muscles causing the wrinkles. Our doctors use a topical anesthetic gel on your facial skin to help keep discomfort to a minimum. You can immediately resume full activities. Maintenance is simple, and best of of all is done without the threat of any scarring. |
